Ferry Hasiholan

From the age of eight, Ferry Hasiholan had a dream.

鈥業 pictured myself living overseas. My family weren鈥檛 rich, so I had to pursue my dream 鈥 an Australian dream,鈥 Ferry recalls.

It wasn鈥檛 until Ferry was 31 that his plan came to fruition.

鈥業n 2007, I left my family and job as an accountant in Indonesia and came to Australia alone. I came with $4000.鈥

He also brought with him his parents鈥 advice: 鈥榳herever you go you need to be within a church, that鈥檚 the most important point in your life.鈥

Raised in a Lutheran environment in Jakarta, Ferry was content with his faith. However, after arriving in Australia, his aunt introduced him to St John鈥檚 Camberwell, and he stepped out of his comfort zone.

鈥業鈥檓 like a social butterfly. I used to just follow the crowd to church to hang out with people who are the same as me. St John鈥檚 was a different culture and age bracket.鈥

This brought a major shift in Ferry鈥檚 thinking.

鈥業 made a connection with the church. I realised I wanted to go to there to be with God.鈥

It was also St John鈥檚 that led him to Trinity. Over the years, Ferry built up a rapport with the Vicar, Father John, who suggested he look at doing a course to further enrich his understanding of theology.

After meeting with the Revd Dr Fergus King from 国产BT, Ferry enrolled in the Monday program, a course in the Ministry Education Centre that takes place every Monday and includes a range of lessons, break-out sessions and communal worship.

鈥楩ergus talked me through and thought it was a good program for me. I wasn鈥檛 convinced at first, because the Monday program is designed for people who are aspiring to become a priest. I don鈥檛 know if that鈥檚 me, but that question is always open,鈥 he says.

Ferry believes being a priest is a calling. 鈥業t鈥檚 not a job. It鈥檚 not a given. It鈥檚 a title from God.鈥

鈥榌Taking] theological studies doesn鈥檛 mean you have to be a priest. It鈥檚 more like having a better understanding and getting the big picture of the history of the bible.鈥

Now after his first year in the course, Ferry feels it鈥檚 giving him a deeper understanding of the Bible and life.

鈥榃e relate to the past to look to the future. When I look at one Bible story or teaching, I think about the story behind it,鈥 he reflects.

鈥楨very time I read the Bible I鈥檓 thinking about this, it鈥檚 not that it鈥檚 necessarily black and white 鈥 I need to make sure my faith to God isn鈥檛 going to be compromised.鈥

Building the trust within the course is also something Ferry feels is important and has really helped him.

鈥業 ask a lot of questions. It鈥檚 how I learn. I鈥檓 comfortable and supported by everyone. My faith gives me the comfort I need to face challenges. Until I finish life, God will be with me.鈥

鈥業鈥檓 a firm believer in que sera sera 鈥 whatever will be will be.鈥
